A casual labourer from Uttar Pradesh was killed during a brief firefight between government forces and militants at a village in south Kashmir's Pulwama district on Wednesday. The slain labourer was identified as Arjun Kumar, a resident of north India's Uttar Pradesh state.
A police official said that militants around 9:45 am fired a volley of bullets on a group of army men of 55 RR, conducting a census in the sleepy village of Hajidarpora.
"The army men immediately retaliated, triggering a brief shoot out", he said, adding that during the exchange of fire a bullet grazed the head of a non-local labourer. He, according to the official, was shifted to SKIMS from district hospital Pulwama where he died of his injuries.
The slain labourer was working at a brick kiln in the nearby Lassipora village. Government forces, soon after the attack, launched a combing operation to nab the militants. Meanwhile, the last rites of the slain labourer were performed by his family at Audoora Navpora village of the district.
