Windstorm wreaks havoc in Jammu region

An 11-year-old boy was killed and five others sustained injuries after a tree fell on their house at Devi Gole-Patnazi village in Kishtwar district while several residential houses and school buildings were damaged in other parts of Jammu region due to a strong windstorm, reports and witnesses said on Sunday.

Police said a huge Cedar tree fell on the mud house of Noor Maie Kohli at 12.45 am on Sunday, trapping the family members who were asleep under the badly damaged house.  

"On hearing the screams of the trapped family members, locals and police personnel from nearby Devi Gole picket rushed to the spot to find that five persons have managed to come out from the debris but a boy was still trapped," said Senior Superintendent of Police, Kishtwar, Sandip Wazir. 

He said police and locals launched a rescue operation but could not save the boy who was buried alive under the debris. 

Police identified the boy as Mohammad Yaseen (11).  However other family members are safe with only minor injuries, the police officer said.

Meanwhile, reports said, strong winds and rains damaged several residential and school buildings in Ramban, Reasi and Udhampur districts during the previous night. 

"Several houses and school buildings were damaged in Banihal, Khari, Akhral, Gool and other parts of district Ramban and Mahore area of district Reasi," they said.

"The strong winds blew away ceiling and tin sheets of many houses and buildings."

Reports said overnight rains and windstorm damaged dozens of houses and several school buildings in Mahomangat, Paristan, Kahri, Banihal, Akhral, Gool and other parts of district Ramban district.

The buildings of Government Middle School Bajhnari and Government High School Trigam were damaged after strong winds blew their ceilings and tin sheets. 

Police said three residential houses of Mohammad Ashraf,  Bashir Ahmed and Sakina Begum caved in due to rains in Upper Angralla village in Mahore area.

The house of Mohammad Aslam son of Abdul Gani of Ladh was damaged after it was hit by a big bolder, police said, adding: "The house of Gulzar Ahmed was also damaged in village Mamankote in Tehsil Chassana."  

The houses of Joginder Singh and Chander Posh were damaged in Ajjal Mongri in district Udhpampur, police said.
