Bad weather again halts Yatra

The annual Amarnath yatra remained suspended for second consecutive day on Thursday due to inclement weather and slippery road conditions. Union home minister Rajnath Singh, who was in the state for a two-day visit, had to cancel his visit to the cave shrine due to extreme weather conditions prevailing on both Pahalgam and Baltal routes that lead to the Amarnath cave on the Himalayas.

“The yatra from both sides remained suspended on Thursday due to bad weather and slippery road conditions on routes leading to the cave shrine” said an official deployed for yatra duty.

They said that the yatra was halted as a precautionary measure for the safety of yatris.

Meanwhile the union home minister Rajnath Singh had to cancel his scheduled visit to the cave after the authorities advised against the visit. “The home minister’s chopper couldn’t take off due to bad weather, preventing him from visiting cave shrine to pay obeisance” an official told Greater Kashmir. No pilgrim on Thursday was allowed to move towards the Kashmir Valley from Jammu as the Amarnath Yatra remained suspended due to inclement weather. According to the officials no pilgrim has departed the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas for the Cave Shrine on Thursday.

Pertinent to mention that the inclement weather has forced multiple disruptions of the amarnath yatra from both Baltal and Pahalgam routes since its commencement on June 28. During past nine days, this is the fifth time that the yatra has been suspended to rainfall and slippery condition on the uphill track. So far, 60,752 pilgrims have performed the Yatra. Four pilgrims were killed and four others injured when a landslide hit the Balta route’s Brarimarg-Railpathri stretch on July 3.
