Boycott clerics who incite sectarian hatred, don’t talk of injustices: Mirwaiz

Some self styled Islamic preachers are spreading hatred to divide people on sectarian lines and they should be boycotted, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq  said here today. He said these clerics didn’t speak of the killings and injustices in the state but displayed passion and eagerness when it came to criticizing each other.

“These preachers are using the sacred pulpits of mosques to divide Muslims of the state by criticizing and demeaning one another on sectarian lines rather than working for religious and social reform among  the society and preaching the real message of unity in Islam,” Mirwaiz said while addressing a  Seerat conference organised by the Anjumane Nusrat Ul Islam at Islamia Hr Sec School Rajouri Kadal.

Mirwaiz said that some clerics were using social media to promote their sectarian agenda which misguides and confuses people especially the youth. “The breach in our unity as an Ummah unfortunately starts from our mosques which cannot be allowed,” he said. “Those who use our religious places to do so should not be tolerated and people should publically boycott them.”

Calling upon the religious leaders to promote the universal message of Islam, Mirwaiz said he will soon organize a meeting of the various religious organizations and preachers from every sect and school of thought to discuss these issues so that mosques become a site for unity and social reform rather than division.

Mirwaiz also condemned mainstream politicians for using the rape and murder of 8 year old Kathua girl to score political points and for vote bank politics. “This heinous act is being used to incite people of one region against another,” Mirwaiz said. “We should not do politics on this grave issue and should be treated so irrespective of the religion. It is painful that some people are siding with and rallying for the accused”.
