Srinagar: Deputy Inspector General, NIA Amit Kumar has been conferred with the prestigious Shaurya Chakra award by President Ram Nath Kovind for displaying “exceptional leadership, indomitable courage and conspicuous bravery”.

He displayed exceptional leadership, indomitable courage and conspicuous bravery in eliminating terrorists during an operation in Jammu and Kashmir” said a Tweet from Press Information Bureau.
It may be mentioned that the Ministry of Home Affairs in September this year had ordered appointment of then DIG Central Kashmir Amit Kumar to the post of DIG NIA on deputation basis.
The competent authority approved appointment of Amit Kumar to the post of DIG, NIA (Level-13A in the pay matrix) on deputation basis for an initial period of 5 years from the date of joining the post or until further orders, whichever event takes place earlier, read an office memorandum by MHA.
Kumar has earlier served as SSP Pulwama, SSP Srinagar, SSP SBK, DIG southern Kashmir and DIG Armed Police.
The senior IPS officer had suffered life-threatening bullet injury during an encounter in which two militants were killed in February 2019 and had rejoined duty as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police after over nine months of hospitalisation.
The Pinglan encounter took place about 12 km from the site where a suicide bomber belonging to the Jaish-e-Muhammed drove his explosive-laden vehicle into a CRPF bus on February 14, killing 40 personnel.
Earlier in August 2020, Amit Kumar was conferred with the prestigious Shaurya Chakra, besides three Army personnel.
