Domicile amendments based on whims of GoI: Omar

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Saturday said the new domicile rule for J&K and the swift amendments to it were based on “whims and fancies” of the Government of India and said it was high time that people of J&K get to decide the laws governing them.

“It’s high time that the people of J&K get todecide the laws governing them rather than being subjected to whims and fanciesof the centre where orders are issued in the morning & changes to the sameorder issued in the evening. Restore statehood, conduct elections,” Omartweeted.

He was referring to the government of India’s recentredefining of domicile rule for J&K wherein outsiders will be for the firsttime granted domicile rights in Jammu and Kashmir after abrogation of Article370 in August last year.

Later in the day, Omar tweeted that the prevailing situationowing to outbreak of Covid19 was not an appropriate time to discuss fallout ofabrogation of Article 370. Omar said he will discuss the issue on an appropriateplatform.

“Delhi made a mistake notifying the domicile rulesduring this time of crisis & I made a mistake getting sucked in to thisdebate at a time when it’s wrong to let politics distract from the #COVID19fight. I haven’t spoken my mind about 5/8/2019 yet but I will when this isover,” Omar wrote on Twitter.

“For the time being, regardless of the provocation,I’ll focus on the battle at hand. Twitter is anyway the wrong place to talkabout what I feel about 5/8/2019 until I’m able to find a platform for adetailed explanation of thoughts/feelings/plans,” he wrote.
