Militant killed, 3 soldiers injured at LoC in Poonch

Army on Monday said that it repulsed an attack by Pakistan’s Border Action Team (BAT) by killing a militant and injuring two others along the Line of Control in Jammu’s Poonch district. Three soldiers were also injured in the gunfight.

Army’s Jammu based spokesman Lt Col DevenderAnand said, “The BAT team, comprising Pakistani regulars and militants tried to sneak in from across the LoC in Gulpur area of Khari Karmara sector last evening under cover of heavy shelling. But the troops foiled their designs.”

He said, “A huge quantity of arms and ammunition along with a Pakistani flag were recovered from the slain militant whose body was found during the search and sanitisation operation.”

“On Sunday evening at about 1715 hours, the Pakistan army initiated unprovoked and indiscriminate firing from small arms, automatics and mortars engaging the troops deployed at forward posts on the LoC. Our troops responded with retaliatory fire in equal measure. The troops noticed some movement and immediately engaged the group with effective fire and there was immediate retaliation from the armed militants.” “The covering fire from Pakistan army posts continued unabated. In the firefight, an armed militant was killed and at least two others sustained grievous injuries and were seen retreating towards a Pakistani post,” said an army official.

“We will be offering to hand over the body of the armed militant to the Pakistan army,” the official added. Three soldiers were injured in the gunbattle and were evacuated to military hospital for specialized treatment, he added. “The modus operandi adopted by the Pakistan Army and the militants in this instance is similar to the attempts made in the recent past in incidents like the one at Keri and Gambir along the LoC and Sunjuwan in Jammu,” Lt Col Anand said.

“After the Sanjuwan incident, in which three militants and seven others including six soldiers were killed, on February 10, Pakistan has refused to accept the bodies of its citizens,” Lt Col Anand said.

3 civilians injured in Uri:

Three persons sustained injuries in cross LoC firing in Uri sector of Baramulla district on Monday, police said. “Pakistani troops resorted to heavy firing in Churanda and Silkote area of border town Uri this evening. The unprovoked firing has resulted in injuries to three civilians,” said SSP Baramulla, ImtiyazHussain.
