Even when other sectors of economy have taken precedence over the primary sector in the developed part of the world, the impotence of agriculture to an economy cannot be underestimated. The level of research that goes on in the sector in the leading science institutions world over is an indication of how serious people in the developed countries are about the important of this sector. We frequently read about high end research and introduction of innovative technology to enhance production of different agricultural varieties, and make them disease resistant. If this is the case with the developed world whose economy reaches new heights based on advancement in the secondary sector, and the unstoppable spread of the tertiary sector. The industries and services in these countries are the mainstay of economy, but still they focus on agriculture and come up with new varieties, high production techniques, and a sprawling defence against disease. This is a lesson for those economies that are still driven by agriculture. Our case in Kashmir is very much the same. We are an agriculture driven economy. The service sector in our state mainly comprises the government jobs. Private sector is not in a healthy condition in this state. The story of industries is known to all. For various reasons it never picked up in the Kashmir valley. So the thing we are left with is agriculture. Our main economic engagement is known in the form of paddy fields, and apple orchids. Any slight damage to the produce hits our economy very hard. As we read the news that ‘the paddy farmers of Kashmir, who were expecting a bumper crop this year, are a worried lot as the paddy blast disease has hit their farm yield badly,” it is matter to be taken up seriously by the concerned. We have an agricultural university here precisely for the same task. We have multiple departments that take up the cause in there routine work, and publicise the same through various media outlets. This is time for them to come forward and take serious note of the matter.
