SHRC asked to frame scheme for army porters

The State Human Rights Commission has asked the government to frame a scheme for the porter’s working with the army.

In a statement, the commission said that one Nasir Din Chichi of Khanabal, Panzgam in Kupwara district, who was working as a porter with the army had died when he slipped off and fell into a Nallah in 1997.

“It is unfortunate that a person who was working with the army like a soldier has not been paid by anybody,” the statement reads.

While deciding the case, the commission directed the principal secretary to the Home department to frame a scheme for such persons who don’t fall under the ambit of any present scheme.

“The commission feels such persons should be treated at par with soldiers because the boy had died while working as porter with the army,” the statement reads.

The commission has also directed the deputy commissioner Kupwara to take up the matter with the concerned army unit and ensure due compensation is paid to the old father of the deceased who was only 25 when he died.

Both the functionaries have been directed to file action-taken report within three months.
