Srinagar-Leh highway reopens

The 434-Km long Srinagar-Leh National Highway was officially reopened on Saturday after four months of closure to replenish essential supplies in Ladakh.

The highway was closed in December last due to heavysnowfall.

   

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ganderbal Khalil AhmedPoswal along with other civil and police officials flagged off the first convoyof about 18 tankers from Sonamarg to cross through Zojila pass on Saturday.

SDPO Kangan Sheikh Tahir, SHO police station Sonamarg LateefAli and other officials of civil administration and Beacon were present on theoccasion.

The SSP said only authorised trucks and tankers carryingessential commodities will be allowed to move towards Ladakh as per theschedule. He said that violators will be dealt with strictly.

“A convoy of 18 tankers was allowed to cross through Zojilapass on Saturday,” the SSP told Greater Kashmir, adding that rest of thetankers which are scheduled to cross through Zojila pass are on way from Jammutowards Leh.

Divisional Commissioner Ladakh Swagat Biswas told GreaterKashmir that Zojila pass has been partially reopened to replenish essentialsupplies in Ladakh. He said no other movement will be allowed on the highway.

The administration has already ordered a standard operatingprocedure (SOP) for movement of trucks, tankers carrying essential commodities.

As per the schedule issued earlier by the divisionaladministration Ladakh about 29 tankers of IOC were authorised to cross throughZojila pass on Saturday.
