Sunny days in Kashmir with chilly nights

The unusual weather pattern continued in Kashmir with sunny and warmer days while nights are extremely chilly.

Cold wave continued with mercury at degrees below the freezing point. Meteorological department continues to predict light rains and snowfall in next 24 hours. Director MeT department, Sonam Lotus said a fresh Western Disturbance is likely to end the dry spell during the next 24 hours in Kashmir. “Light rain or snow would occur at isolated places over Jammu and Kashmir from Monday evening as a fresh WD, originating in Arabian sea has entered the region,” Lotus said adding that spell will be very brief.

   

Pertinently, earlier the WDs turned weak and left without touching Kashmir though in some higher reaches there was light to moderate snowfall.

MeT officials said that Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.8 degrees Celsius while mercury in Qazigund settled at minus 4.8 degrees Celsius. They Kokernag registered a low of minus 2.3 degrees Celsius last night while as ski resort of Gulmarg in Baramulla district recorded a low of minus 8.6 degrees Celsius.  “Gulmarg was the coldest recorded place in Kashmir last night,” officials said.

Officials said Kupwara recorded a low of minus 5.2 degrees Celsius slightly down from the previous night s minus 5.1 degrees Celsius while as mercury in Pahalgam settled at a low of minus 5.6 degrees. They said Kargil saw the mercury rise by nearly three degrees last night. It settled at minus 16 degrees Celsius while as Leh town was the second coldest as the mercury there settled at a low of minus 11.9 degrees Celsius.
