Truck ‘carrying cash’ catches fire, police launch probe

A truck carrying currency notes caught fire along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway near Qazigund area of southern Anantnag district on Monday, officials said.

The vehicle bearing registration number JK05A-8795 andcarrying currency notes and other material caught fire near Panzath area due tounknown reasons in the wee hours, they said.

   

As per witnesses, the driver and conductor of vehicle had anarrow escape, but the vehicle suffered “significant” damage.

Meanwhile, the police reached the spot and started investigations to ascertain the cause of the incident.

A police officer denied reports that the currency was being allegedly transported in the truck for distribution among voters in the Anantnag parliamentary seat.

Meanwhile, in a statement, a police spokesman said: “The truck carrying the scrap was driven by Nazir Ahmad Rather of Watpora, Bandipora along with conductor Inam-ul-Haq, also a resident of Bandipora”. “Some burnt currency notes were also found near the site of incident along with charred scrap.

Police have registered a case FIR No. 66/2019 under relevant sections of law and further investigation in the matter is going on,” the statement read. “Both driver and the conductor of the truck remain in police station for the purpose of investigation”.
