World Bank approves 2-lane Wayil steel bridge in Ganderbal

The World Bank has sanctioned the construction of a vital bridge at Wayil over nallah Sindh in Ganderbal district of central Kashmir. The bridge will ease the travel on the Srinagar-Leh highway.

The two lane steel truss bridge funded by the WB under Jammu Tawi flood reconstruction project (JTFRP) has been sanctioned at a cost of 15 crore.

The construction of the bridge was a long pending demand of the locals as well as the travellers as it is the only main link connecting Srinagar with Leh.

Director JTFRP Vinod Kumar Sharma told Greater Kashmir that the bridge has been sanctioned and would be taken up under JTFRP.

He said the project has been recommended by the government and the approval of tenders is in the final stage.

Chief Engineer R&B (executing agency) Sami Arif said the all the requisite formalities have been completed and submitted to the World Bank for the final approval of the tenders.

He said that as soon as the tendering process is completed, the construction work will be taken up.  He said that it will be a two lane steel truss bridge coming at a cost of Rs 15 crore.

The World Bank provides financing and services to low and middle-income countries to support development and change. Development projects are implemented by borrowing countries following certain rules and procedures to guarantee that the money reaches its intended target.

Talking to Greater Kashmir, MLA Kangan Mian Altaf Ahmed said the bridge was a long pending demand of the people.

Altaf said with the construction of a permanent bridge over nallah Sindh at Wayil it will ease the traffic snarls due to which the commuters are facing inconvenience.

Pertinent to mention that the present  single lane steel bridge over nallah Sindh in Ganderbal district connecting Srinagar with Leh is causing frequent traffic halts.

The bridge was constructed more than two decades ago by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) after the old wooden bridge got damaged due to floods in 1992.3 including mother-daughter die in road accident
