‘Extremely happy’: Azad hails release of Omar Abdullah

Senior Congressman and the leader of Opposition in RajyaSabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad on Tuesday welcomed the release of former ChiefMinister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah.

“I am extremely happy that ultimately Mr. Omar Abdullah hasbeen released after nearly eight months of detention by the CentralGovernment.  This detention was totally undemocratic and uncalledfor.   I urge the Government of India to also immediately releaseMrs. Mehbooba Mufti and hundreds of other  political detainees who areeither in Jammu & Kashmir or in jails of different parts of thecountry  especially in view of the Corona-virus crisis,” Azad said in astatement.

   

He added that it’s high time that the Government realisesits mistake and restores the statehood of Jammu & Kashmir. He furtherelaborated that the Government must also give back the exclusive rights onlands and services and the constitutional and democratic rights of the people ofJammu & Kashmir as before August 2019.

Azad along with other opposition leaders have beenrepeatedly demanding the release of the former Chief Ministers and other seniorleaders of all the political parties and civilians who have been detained on4th August 2019 and after, at all forums inside and outside the Parliament. The opposition leaders had also represented to the President forrelease of Jammu & Kashmir leaders from “unconstitutionaldetention.”
