Polls not for India, Pak but for betterment of people: Governor

Exhorting the people of Kashmir to come out to vote in the upcoming panchayat and municipal polls, the new governor of Jammu and Kashmir Satya Pal Malik on Saturday said the polls were not for India or Pakistan but for the “betterment of people of the state.”

Speaking to the media at the launch of India Posts Payment Bank at SKICC, he said: “Our security arrangements are excellent. There is no need to worry; we will put in all efforts.” 

   

When asked about whether the situation is conducive for polls, Malik said “Conducive situation depends on the people, it is up to them to make situation conducive as they will get benefited from these polls.” he said.

Malik urged people to participate in these polls as they are for the benefit and betterment of the state. “Wherever Farooq Abdullah speaks and he encourages me. Only he can say those things over which others can remain silent. Nobody can say what Farooq has said about upcoming polls. Elections are not for India and Pakistan neither they can resolve Kashmir issue. It will empower you and resolve your issues.”

“Those who get elected will spend funds for development works and they are accountable to you,” he said adding that “your vote is not for Raj Bhawan or Prime Minister Office but it is for the people who you will choose among your community.”

The elections have been announced for municipal bodies and Panchayat in the state. The State Administrative Council said elections to Municipal Bodies will be conducted in four phases between 1st and 5th of October. Panchayat elections will be conducted in 8 phases between 8th November and 4th December.

Chief Electoral Officer has been asked to adjust the schedules keeping in view the security, operational and polling requirements. The Council also decided to grant one month’s extra salary to staff engaged in the conduct of elections besides insurance cover.

Earlier, the Council chaired by Governor Satya Pal Malik, extensively deliberated upon all aspects and feedback from Departments of Housing & Urban Development, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj and Home. Governor on the occasion lauded the role India Posts and wished them success for their future endeavours.
