Stray dog menace ‘on rise’ in Kishtwar

The rise is the number of stray dogs has made life miserable for the people living across Kishtwar district, the locals said on Friday.

“Dogs have invaded every lane and are a serious cause of nuisance,” Ali Azgar, a resident of Kishtwar town, said, adding that the municipal committee has “failed to control” the menace of stray dogs.

Scores of school-going students among locals lamented, “In the vicinity of Faisalabad, Bus Stand, Hidyal and ShaheediChowk, dogs have spread terror. As the number of dogs has risen, the threat has increased.”

The locals alleged that most of the dogs can be found near meat and poultry shops, as the shopkeepers feed them. “The threat due to these stray dogs has become so severe that many parents are not sending their children to school alone. Women, children and senior citizens have been affected the most due to the presence of stray dogs,” they claimed.

ImtiyazHussain, another resident, said, “During morning and evening hours, when people are heading towards mosques and temples, the dogs chase people. We live in constant fear as the municipal committee is just waiting for a miracle to happen. They are not doing anything.”

The locals appealed to the district administration and the municipal committee to look into the matter and ensure that the menace is controlled at an earliest.
