Two-way traffic resumes on Sgr-Jmu Highway

Traffic on the 300-KM Srinagar-Jammu Highway was restored on both ways on Tuesday after remaining restricted for almost a month to one-way.

“The arterial road has been thrown open for two-way traffic,” a traffic department spokesman said.

He said passenger vehicles and light motor vehicles have been allowed both ways. However, load carriers have been allowed to move only from Srinagar to Jammu, he added.

The bottlenecks were cleared and width of the road at certain places which was narrowed due to landslides was restored which permitted traffic on the highway two-way after it remained restricted to one-way for almost 22 days, he said.

All essentials are coming to the landlocked Kashmir Valley through this highway, temporary closures due to snowfall and landslides often result in shortage of such essentials.

Meanwhile, Srinagar-Banihal train service was resumed on Tuesday after remaining suspended for two consecutive days.

“The train service resumed on Tuesday. The service remained suspended on Sunday and Monday due to security reasons, following a suicide attack on a CRPF Centre at Lethpora in which five CRPF personnel and three militants were killed,” an official said.
