No threat of floods though

Heavy rains for last some days in Kashmir have caused flash floods and flood like situation in several areas. This has also triggered landslides. The water in rivers, tributaries and other water bodies has also risen. Residential houses have submerged and a number of areas water logged.

Similar reports have come from some areas of Jammu also. Because of the emerging situation several major roads have been closed and schools in several districts closed as well. The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, Mughal Road and Srinagar-Leh highway are closed.

Authorities say there is no imminent flood threat. But in view of prediction of more rain, the concerned departments are in a state of readiness to tackle the related challenges. Official meetings are being held to monitor the situation and chalk out strategies.

Advisories are being issued by administration and concerned departments to take necessary precautions. In view of the emerging situation there is a need to take all precautions. There is no room for complacency. The government must take all required steps and all its announced measures should be implemented on the ground.

The people too must cooperate with the concerned departments and adhere to the advisories for their safety. There is no need to venture into the water bodies at this time when the water level is on the rise. All other advisories regarding travel on affected roads in such situations have to be followed.

More dewatering pumps must be utilised in waterlogged areas in Srinagar and other areas. The submerged roads in waterlogged areas in the city must be made traffic worthy.

The motorists have been facing lot of problems while passing through waterlogged areas. Those living along the rivers and water bodies have to remain cautious.

It is being hoped that this situation improves as the rains stop and water level comes down in rivers and nallahs. Amid this situation a question arises – is Kashmir ready for another flood any time in future?

We pray and wish that such a situation should never arise again. But being prepared does not mean being panic stricken. At government and and non- governmental levels lessons must be learnt to plan future strategies for dealing with such natural calamities.
