Students brave risk in continuing education from dilapidated school building in Kangan

Kangan, May 21: The students enrolled in Government Primary School Gujjar pati Kulan in Kangan sub division of Ganderbal district always remain in constant fear as the school building is in dilapidated condition and the under construction road leading to Z-Morh tunnel is in close proximity with their school building.

The school located at the edge of the Srinagar-Leh highway poses threat to the lives of nearly 40 children and staff as the school is without any protection wall.

Locals said that they fear that the building which is in dilapidated condition may collapse anytime and the school which has no fencing or protection wall may result in any untoward incident.

“The building is dangerously close to the Srinagar-Leh highway and the under construction approach road to Z-Morh tunnel,” said a local resident adding that heavy machinery moves on a daily basis on this road.

Locals said they have approached the Education Department on many occasions and have apprised them about the problems faced by their children. “However, officials didn’t pay any attention towards our pleas,” they added. “Authorities should construct a protection wall or fence the premises of the school building for the safety of the students and staff.”

A staff member at the school said that the non fenced school is posing a danger to the students and staff as on many occasions the vehicles met with accidents. He said that the school has 38 students enrolled and the school building has three rooms including one for office purposes. Parents of children said that the school building consists of three rooms only and all are in dilapidated condition with rain water seeping from roof and walls during rains.

The locals have urged the senior officers of the Education Department and district administration to visit the school immediately and arrange to carry out proper repair and maintenance of this building.

Zonal Education Officer Hariganiwan Qamar Din didn’t answer the phone calls by this newspaper.

Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal Shyambir assured that he will look into the matter and take necessary action. ” It is a serious issue, I will look into it and direct the concerned officials to take the necessary steps ” DC told Greater Kashmir.
