2 militants held after brief encounter in Kulgam

Two militants were held by police and security forces after a brief encounter in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Tuesday.

The duo was identified as Aamir Ahmad Mir of Hatipora, Kulgam, and Yawar Ahmad Wagay of Reban, Shopian,

   

A police official said that a joint team of Srinagar and Kulgam police besides army’s 34 RR and CRPF cordoned Tongdounu village in Kulgam and launched searches.

“As they approached a house, the hiding militants opened fire. The fire was returned, triggering an encounter,” he said.

The police official said the families of the militants were brought to the spot, and after their persuasion the duo surrendered.

“1 AK47, 2 pistols, grenades and ammunition were recovered from their possession,” he said.

The police official said the hideout inside the house was destroyed.

Inspector-General of Police Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, said the militants surrendered after they were offered a choice to lay down arms.
