Ramban, May 5: The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained open for two-way traffic of Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and heavy vehicles but the movement remained slow due to narrow road stretches at many places between Nashri and Banihal sectors on Sunday.
The officials, monitoring the regulation of traffic in Ramban, said, “The highway remained open but the traffic movement remained slow due to the breakdown of 10 heavy vehicles; single lane carriageway at Dalwass, Mehar-Cafeteria, Panthial, Nachlana, Shalgari and poor road surface conditions at many places besides the movement of nomads with their livestock between Nashri-Banihal sectors.”
They said, “Despite slow traffic movement, hundreds of LMVs and heavy vehicles crossed the Nashri-Banihal sector for their respective destinations without any disruption till late Sunday evening. Heavy load carriers are heading towards Kashmir and Jammu in a regulated manner.”
The officials at the Traffic Control Unit (TCU), Ramban said, “The highway is open for two-way traffic. Heavy vehicles are plying from Srinagar towards Jammu but the traffic movement is slow between Ramban and Banihal due to the movement of large numbers of nomadic herds and single-lane traffic at various places.”
They advised the vehicle operators and commuters to follow lane discipline as overtaking would lead to congestion.
Meanwhile, the J&K Traffic Police Department issued a fresh advisory for Monday stating that subject to fair weather and road clearance, LMVs would be allowed to ply on either side of the highway.
“Heavy vehicles will be allowed to ply on the highway after assessing the road and traffic situation on Monday,” officials said.
