Tourist slips to death in Sonamarg

Ganderbal, May 25:  A male tourist from Maharashtra died while his wife was injured when the couple accidentally fell into a snow cavity after a portion of a glacier in Sonamarg suddenly broke on Saturday.

An official said that a tourist couple who were on a visit to Sonamarg accidentally fell into a snow cavity at the Thajwas Glacier after a portion of the glacier broke down apparently due to the rising temperatures. “As the news spread, the tourists at the spot alongside the Police and Wildlife Department officials rescued the duo. Both were taken to the nearby hospital where the male was declared dead by doctors,” the official said.

   

He identified the deceased as Deepak Prahlad Patil, 38, of Maharashtra.

The official said that the female tourist injured in the incident was given medical treatment.

He said that investigation in this regard had been taken up.
