Mirwaiz to lead prayers, give religious sermon after five years at Jama Masjid Srinagar

Srinagar, Apr 03:The administration has finally decided to break the deadlock after five years, allowing Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to lead prayers on the sacred occasions of Jummat-ul-Vida, Shab-e-Qadr, and Eid-ul-Fitr, the chief cleric’s office said Wednesday.

It said a meeting of Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid chaired by Mirwaiz was also held today where arrangements to provide facilities for worshipers on the sacred occasions at the historic Jama Masjid were finalised.

The arrangements have been reviewed especially for believers coming from far-off places.

It was decided that the Jummat-ul-Vida prayer will be offered at 2:30 pm while Mirwaiz will start the sermon at 12:40 pm, and on Shab-e-Qadr, the Taraweeh prayer will be offered at 10:30 pm and at 12:00 am there will be a Majlis-e-Waaz-o-Tableegh, Auqaf office said in an official communique.

It said that Mirwaiz instructed officials to perform their responsibilities adequately, ensuring basic facilities like electricity, water, cleaning, and the laying of carpets for the holy occasions.

There should be no complaints from the worshipers, Mirwaiz told the men from Auqaf.

In the meeting, the J&K administration was also urged to ensure the improvement of power supply, water availability and traffic management inside the Jama Masjid compound during these blessed days and to take special care of cleanliness and hygiene around it, the communique said.

Expecting huge numbers of worshipers to throng the central masjid, the people have been requested to bring their own prayer mats with them on the occasion of Jummat-ul-Vida.

Just two days back, Mirwaiz had asked authorities to not put any curbs on him.
