Shagufta Yasmeen, M.D., MBBS, MACP has been awarded the Oscar E. Edwards Memorial Award for Volunteerism and Community Service by the American College of Physicians (ACP), a national organization of internal medicine physicians.
Award recipients will be recognized at ACP’s annual Convocation ceremony on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, where ACP is hosting its annual scientific conference, Internal Medicine Meeting 2024, through April 20.
The Oscar E. Edwards Memorial Award for Volunteerism and Community Service Award was established in 1998 and is presented to an ACP Medical Student Member, Resident/Fellow Member, or recipient of a Mastership of the American College of Physicians (MACP) who has initiated/participated in volunteer programs or provided post-training volunteer service.
The service must have been voluntary and not for the completion of training or position requirements. Volunteer work must have been done as an internal medicine physician or medical trainee and be health care related.
Dr. Yasmeen graduated from Govt Medical College Srinagar Kashmir in 1984. She received her degree in obstetrics and gynecology in London from the teaching hospitals St. Bartholomew’s and Whipps Cross. After immigrating to the United States, Dr. Yasmeen undertook training in internal medicine at UC Davis.
Dr. Yasmeen’s outstanding performance as a resident and unique preparation to teach both internal medicine and women’s health was quickly noticed by her colleagues and superiors, which led to her invitation to join the faculty at UC Davis with joint appointments in the Division of General Medicine and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She became a valued faculty member, obtained additional training in clinical epidemiology, and published over 35 papers from her first appointment through promotion to Associate Professor (with tenure) and beyond.
During her time as a full-time faculty member (2001–2015), she received numerous awards attesting to her teaching, leadership, and humanism, including the Leadership Excellence Award (UCD Health, 2000), Excellence in Teaching Award (Association of Professors of Gynecology & Obstetrics, 2003), Alpha Omega Alpha Award (UCD School of Medicine, 2006), AMA Leadership Award (American Medical Association, 2009).
As an active member of ACP, Dr. Yasmeen has also received accolades in recognition of her outstanding work such as the National Award for Diversity and Access to Care (American College of Physicians, 2011), Internal Medicine Outstanding Volunteer Faculty Award (2019), and Kaiser Teaching Award (2021). She has also volunteered outside the United States in Cambodia, Jamaica, Tanzania, and other parts of the world.
