New Delhi, May 4: The government is set to complete the replacement of military personnel stationed at the final of three aviation platforms in the Maldives by May 10th. Both sides have expressed contentment with the smooth progress of logistical arrangements, ensuring a seamless transition.

The fourth meeting of the High-level Core Group between the Maldives and India convened in New Delhi on Friday, reinforcing the commitment to bilateral cooperation. Discussions encompassed various areas of mutual interest, including development and defence cooperation, reflecting the depth of the strategic partnership. Following the meeting, it was reaffirmed that the Indian government will replace military personnel with civilian experts, a process initiated two months ago. These experts will oversee the operation and maintenance of helicopters and aircraft crucial for humanitarian and medical evacuation services in the Maldives.

President Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, while previously signalling a shift towards stronger ties with China, has set a deadline for the withdrawal of Indian military troops. Nonetheless, India remains steadfast in its commitment to support the Maldives’ socio-economic development, as evidenced by increased budget allocations for development assistance in the interim budget for 2024-25.
