Jammu under R-Day security siege

Security measures were beefed up in Jammu on the eve of the Republic Day, especially around Maulana Azad stadium, venue for the main function.

Policemen, paramilitary forces, soldiers and air force personnel have been deployed to keep an eye on any suspicious activity.

“A control room was also set up to monitor surveillance in every area of Jammu, which has been put on the highest alert after intelligence agencies sounded alert,” a police official said.

“The stadium has also been sealed. VIP enclosures, from which Governor NN Vohra will host the national flag on Friday, have been put under unprecedented ground to air security surveillance,” he said.

Special security posts have been set up along the banks of river Tawi, while anti-aircraft guns have been placed at strategic locations to thwart attempts to violate the air space over the venue, sources added.

Besides the city, additional quick reaction teams have been deployed along all vulnerable routes.

Border Security Force is also on alert along the International Border from Kathua to Akhnoor.

“Threat perception is the highest for the event in view of escalated ceasefire violations but there is no specific intelligence input about a possible terror strike,” officials engaged with security drill told Greater Kashmir.

Meanwhile, the police have sought cooperation from the people attending the Republic Day function, asking them not to carry cameras, arms, ammunition, sharp-edged weapons, hand and polythene bags, purses, lunch boxes, stop watches, pens, any inflammable material, cigarettes, match boxes, and other such objectionable items to the venue.

The people have been asked to immediately inform the police on duty in case any suspicious item is noticed lying unattended.

It also urged people to extend full cooperation to the frisking and checking teams deployed at different gates of the MA Stadium.
