10,000 posts vacant in J&K Police: MHA

There are over 10,000 vacant posts in the Jammu and Kashmir Police, reveals an official document of Ministry of Home Affairs.

The document in possession of Greater Kashmir states:”Sanctioned strength of J&K Police is 87,882. Of which actual strength is77,838. Thus remaining 10,044 posts are vacant which are to be filled by thepolice department.”

   

“Police is a state subject falling in List-II (State List)of the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution of India. It is primarily theresponsibility of the state governments and administrations of unionterritories to fill up the vacancies in the police force.”

“The Centre also issues advisories to the states to fill upthe vacancies and to bring in the requisite reforms in the Policeadministration to meet the expectations of the people,” it adds.

According to the document total sanctioned strength of thepolice force across country is 23,79,728 among them 18, 51,332 posts have beenfilled and rest 5,28,396 are vacant.

This year, Jammu and Kashmir Police recruited AssistantSub-Inspectors and also issued a notification for the recruitment of constablesfor raising two border battalions one each in Jammu and Kashmir province.

The department has also issued a notification for thefilling up of constable vacancies in two women battalions (one battalion eachin Jammu and Kashmir region)) from the permanent residents. Applications havebeen invited from female candidates only.

In yet another attempt to provide job opportunities to theyouth, the Home Ministry has decided to hire around 16,000 locals from Jammuand Kashmir in various wings of armed forces.

In 2017, the then Minister of State for Home Affairs HansrajAhir, in a written reply had informed Rajya Sabha that in order to generateemployment for youth in J&K, the government has approved additionalrecruitment of 10,000 SPOs, recruitment of around 5381 personnel in five newIndia Reserve Battalions and recruitment of 1079 personnel of CAPFs and AssamRifles.

Ahir had said that recruitment of locals in armed forces wasconceived with an idea to encourage youth to join the mainstream and”providing employment opportunities to wean them away frommilitancy”.

Besides law and order, Jammu and Kashmir police are onforefront in dealing with militancy in the state.
