Day 2: Kokernag shuts to mourn militant killings

Kokernag area in Anantnag district observed a shutdown for the second consecutive day on Tuesday to mourn the death of a local militant and his two associates in a gunfight with the government forces. 

All shops, schools and other business establishments remained closed in Kokernag tehsil, including Zalangam and Vailoo, while public transport was off the roads.

   

Syed Owais Shafi of Vailoo area of Kokernag was among three militants killed in a gunfight on Sunday night. 

Thousands of people had participated in the multiple funerals held for him at his native Gohan-Vailoo village on Monday. 

Owais had just completed his engineering degree when he joined militancy last year.

Meanwhile, Ganderbal and Kangan towns observed a partial shutdown on second running day on Tuesday to mourn the death of three militants, including Eisa Fazili of Soura Srinagar. 

All the shops remain closed at Nagbal, Pandach, Kangan, Beehama and Duderhama and 90ft area of the Ganderbal district.
