Family alleges negligence by SKIMS in treatment of cancer patient

Family members of a cancer patient under treatment at regional cancer center of Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) have alleged “negligence” by authorities concerned in providing treatment to the patient.

A 30-year old female patient undergoing treatment for breast cancer at SKIMS has not been able to get chemotherapy for two weeks due to a “wrong entry” in her medical records, her family members said.

“She was slated to get chemotherapy days ago, but now she will be dated for next week if she is lucky,” said Javed Ahmed, patient’s brother.

As per the family, the staff members at the institute who filled her form for complete blood count (CBC) had allegedly entered wrong details which resulted in delay and confusion regarding basic tests mandatory before getting a chemo dose.

“If he entered some other patient’s name on my sister’s form, he must also have filled the other patient’s form wrong,” Ahmed alleged.

He said that due to the mistakes of staff members their patient was forced to undergo miseries. He pleaded for attention by administration of the premier Institute towards the cases of his sister.

Medical superintendent SKIMS, Dr Farooq A Jan said the hospital had a “robust dual identity” mechanism for investigations which eliminated errors in forms. “I would still investigate how this has happened,” he said.
