The High Court on Friday directed the government to inform it about the steps taken to implement Food Safety and Standard Act in Jammu and Kashmir.
Hearing a Public Interest litigation petition against food adulteration, division bench of Chief Justice Gita Mital and Justice Alok Aradhe sought the action taken report in this regard within three weeks.
The direction came after advocate general D C Raina assured the court that all necessary steps will be taken to implement the Act.
“The government is serious about the issue. I have personally examined the matter. Every step will be taken to implement the Act,” Raina said.
He assured the court that action taken report will be filed within three weeks.
The Court listed the matter for further consideration on November 19.
Meanwhile the court took on record an affidavit by assistant commissioner Food Safety for district Srinagar stating that enforcement officers can seal any premises in the interest of public health where the manufactured food appears to be unsafe for human consumption.
In 2016, the High Court had taken suo-moto cognizance of news reports published in Greater Kashmir on the food adulteration and rising cancer incidence and treated them as a Public Interest Litigation.
