HC pushes for juvenile justice law

The High Court on Tuesday directed the government to inform it by August 28 about the enactment of law with regard to juvenile justice in the state.

Hearing a Public Interest Litigation initiated by it on its own motion, a division bench of Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Alok Aradhe sought an affidavit in the regard from the law department within 10 days.

“Let the affidavit of an officer not below the rank of director in the department of law setting out the status and action taken as well as the time lines within which the enactment of law with regard to the juvenile in the state law shall be completed and the law effectuated,” the bench said.

The direction came after the court observed that in the earlier status report the government had submitted that the draft reenactment bill was to make it at par Juvenile Justice Act enacted by the parliament.

The court directed the respondents in the affidavit shall also give details of the infrastructure and facilities for the Juvenile Justice Boards (JJBs) as well as Child Welfare Committees .

Meanwhile, the Commissioner Secretary Social Welfare Department (SWD) is also directed to file an affidavit indicating the action taken with regard to other directions issued by the court.

The court also took on record the status report filed by Advocate N A Beigh on behalf of State Legal Services Authority.
