Hundreds spend sleepless night on Mughal Road

Hundreds of passengers in about 40 vehicles spent the night on the Mughal Road after snowfall and hailstorm forced the authorities to close it for vehicular traffic late Wednesday evening.

The road was opened for traffic on Wednesday morning after a gap of five months but many vehicles got stuck near Pir Ki Gali due to a landslide that was cleared in the night. But the road had become icy and unfit for traffic.

The passengers were stranded between Chatta Pani and Pir Ki Gali.

Tazeem Dar, a resident of Rajouri, said they had a tough time because of sub-zero temperature and lack of food and drinking water.

Deputy superintendent of police (traffic) Rajouri and Poonch Mohammad Rafiq said the stranded vehicles moved towards their destinations in the morning.

Also, during the day, about 450 vehicles crossed over to Shopian from Poonch. Traffic movement was allowed from Poonch side for the second day today.

Rafiq said reckless driving by some people was creating problems. He requested the people to follow traffic rules for a smooth journey.

He said movement of vehicles would be allowed only between 5 am and 3 pm from Bufliyaz on the days of Poonch-Shopian traffic.
