In a first, Baramulla police has started a door-to-door “census” of households in Baramulla town. The exercise according to a top police official is “aimed to check the growing incidents of burglaries” in the town. However, sources said it is “part of an exercise aimed to deal with the current security situation in the area.”
According to locals, police has started the “census” from the uptown and is collecting the details of each family in the town.
The locals said the policemen were seeking information about the head of the family, his profession, spouse, and other family members.
“The cops visited us on Thursday. They asked for the details like the total number of family members we have, their profession and annual income,” said a resident of Kanlibagh Baramulla.
He said “The cops also sought details about the house like how much area is left for courtyard and the backyard of the house, etc.”
“The exercise will be carried out in the entire town. It has nothing to do with the security situation. Its aim is to check the growing incidents of burglaries in the town,” said Imtiyaz Hussain, senior superintendent of police, Baramulla.
Baramulla town comprises 26 wards. Most of the wards are located in the overcrowded area of old town. However, since maximum security installations are located in the uptown, the wards in the uptown are considered important in terms of security and law and order.
