International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking | ‘90% of drug addicts struggling with mental issues’

On the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking today, “Raahat” a non-governmental organisation, organised a programme at Sub District Hospital Sopore.

The event highlighted the ill-effects of drug abuse.

   

A good number of people including students, members of civilsociety and economic alliance Sopore participated in the event.

BMO Sopore Dr Samiullah, president Doctors AssociationKashmir Dr Suhail Naik, members of Press Club Sopore, officials of police and staffof SDH Sopore were also present.

On the occasion speakers made an earnest appeal to theparents to keep watch on their wards, especially school-going children, inorder to keep them away from this menace.

Ashiq Hussain Zaki, chairman Raahat, on the occasion saidthat parents, schools, religious scholars and society have a role to playregarding to curb this menace.

“A survey shows that 90 per cent of the drug addictsare struggling with mental issues. They need psychological, psychiatric andfamily support,” Zaki said.

He said Raahat believes that the “main culprits are thesuppliers and drug mafia agencies against whom immediate action needs to betaken.”

SHO Sopore Azim Khan said that police has contributed a lotin eradicating the drug menace in Sopore town.

Others who spoke on occasion were Dr. Suhail Naik, presidentDAK, Advocate Ubaid Shamus, Clinical psychologist of MSF Dr. Zahoor, Dr SheemaShah, columnist Rashid Parveen.

A rally was also organised at government higher secondaryschool Dangarpora Sopore, which was attended by students, staff and localpeople.

The ADC Sopore, who was the chief guest, flagged off theawareness rally of students which passed through various markets at Dangarpora,Zaingeer areas.
