Locals allege Anantnag vendor was injured in army firing; police denies

A vegetable vendor was injured after army allegedly opened fire following a ‘gunshot’ like sound in Srigufwara area of Bijbehara in southern Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday, even as police said that the man was shot at by unknown gunmen.

The injured identified as Javed Ahmad Waza sustained bullet injury in his back. He was shifted to district hospital where from he was referred to SKIMS, Soura in a critical condition.

   

Locals quoting eyewitnesses said army men fired at Waza near bus stand.

“The army mistook the sound of a tyre burst or a fire cracker as gunshot and opened fire. One of the bullets hit Waza following which he fell down on the ground,” said a local, Sajad Ahmad.

Police however said that the vegetable vendor was shot at by the gunmen. “The man suffered injuries after being fired at by gunmen,” SSP Anantnag Altaf Ahmad Khan was quoted as having said by the GNS news agency.

A case has been registered and further investigation has been initiated, he said.
