No evidence of teenage girl being a ‘suicide bomber’: Police

After five days of her hectic questioning, J&K police Sunday revealed that no “substantial evidence” could be found against the teenage suspect to declare her a “suicide bomber”.

Police revealed that they have invited the girl’s mother and also a team of Maharashtra police to get deeper into the investigations “so that a final call is taken.”

“We quizzed her and investigated on our own level. But so far no evidence has been found to declare the girl as a suicide bomber,” additional director general of police, Muneer Khan told Greater Kashmir.

On January 23, police had flashed an in-house message stating that a girl, aged 18, from Yerwada, Pune, Maharastra had managed her entry into Kashmir fearing “she may carry out a suicide attack on R-day eve.”

The message was sent to all the district senior superintendents of police (SSPs) and also shared with central reserve police force (CRPF) and the army as well.

Amid heightening security alert, on January 24, police arrested the girl and asserted that “it will quiz her to find out whether she really was a suicide bomber.”

“Since we couldn’t establish any militant link of the girl, we have invited her mother and also urged the Maharashtra police team to come to Kashmir to cooperate with us in our investigations,” Khan said.

“We will find out whether she has anything adverse in her native police station. Besides, we will also seek her mother’s cooperation as to whether her daughter was suffering from any disease and why and how she reached Kashmir.”

A source in the police said that Mahrashtra police team is scheduled to reach Srinagar on Monday. “Since she is not a native of Kashmir, we are duty bound to complete investigations about her and only let her go, if she turns out to be an innocent,” he said.

The source said that during the course of investigation, it was found that the girl was born on November 1, 1999 and has passed class 10 examinations.

“She was studying in St. Felix High School, 4 Boat Club Road, Bundgarden, Pune. Her original address is Gharonda Society, PhulenagarYerwada, Pune,” he said.
