North Kashmir witnesses light snowfall

Bandipora district in north Kashmir witnessed light snowfall with no major disruptions in daily life on Sunday.

The plains in the district recorded 1-inch snowfall while the upper reaches witnessed a couple of inches more snow with the weather remaining mostly dry and overcast after a brief spell in the morning hours.

According to officials, there was no major disruption due to snowfall on Sunday though few roads which were slippery had been cleared shortly after snowfall. Gurez valley too witnessed light snowfall and roads remained “open” except for the Gurez-Bandipora road which has been closed for traffic till March-end, officials said.

“There was no major disruption, the water supply is functional and roads were open as the snow was not deep,” SDM Gurez, Mudasir Ahmad said. He said the seven-hour generator power supply was continuing without any disruption in Gurez valley.

However, the Gurez-Bandipora road maintained by Border Roads Organisation has been closed for traffic following snow slides on Saturday. “The road will now be cleared of snow in March and will remain closed for winter months,” Ahmad said.

The BRO officials said the road was clear but closed for traffic as for being dangerous to the commuters who would want to travel on it.

For the PHE department in Bandipora, snowfall came as a relief as cold and dry weather caused frosting and disrupting the regular water supply.

Talking to Greater Kashmir, Executive Engineer, PHE Bandipora Abdul Khaliq said, “Ninety percent of the water supply schemes in Bandipora are functional. Some of the schemes in the upper reaches had developed some faults due to cold weather but have now been restored while the water supply schemes in the town areas are fully functional.”

“The power supply in the district on Sunday was not impacted much but further snowfall will determine if there is any disruption,” Abdul Wahid, a local from Quil village said.

Meanwhile, the administration said that it was geared up for inclement weather and had directed all essential departments to remain on alert to meet any eventuality arising from snowfall and adverse weather conditions.
