Number of Upper House members down to 30

The strength of J&K  Legislative Council would come down to 30 on Thursday as four members complete their six-year term.

The four members— Ghulam Nabi Monga (Congress), Ali Muhammad Dar (National Conference), Shenaz Ganie (NC) and Sham Lal Baghat( Congress)— who were elected against seats of Panchayat quota in 2013 during the NC-Congress rule, would complete their term tomorrow.

Already, two seats of  the urban local bodies quota are vacant in the House from 2008 and 2011 respectively because urban local bodies elections were not held for a long time.

While one seat of ULB quota fell vacant due to resignation of PDP leader Nizamuddin Bhat from membership of the House in 2008 after he was elected as MLA, the other berth became vacant after Arvinder Singh Mickey of Congress completed his term in 2011.

The strength of NC and Congress would come down to four seats each in the House now. The Peoples Democratic Party and Bharatiya Janta Party  have 11 MLCs each in the House.

As already reported by this newspaper, eight more MLCs are completing their term in March 2019 .

Those completing the term in March next year include PDP ideologue and former cabinet minister Naeem Akther .

Other MLCs retiring are Muhammad Muzaffar Parrey (Congress), Sofi Yosouf (BJP), Showkat Hussain Ganie (NC), Rani Billoria (Congress), Naresh Gupta (Congress),Yashpal Sharma (PDP) and Firdous Tak (PDP).

While Akther, Parrey, Ganie, Billoria and Gupta were elected for the full six-year term in 2013 , Tak and Yosouf were elected for four years in 2015 against the casual vacancies created by resignation of MLCs who were elected as MLAs in 2014 Assembly polls.
