Public movement restricted in Anantnag town to prevent protests

Authorities on Friday restricted movement of people in Anantnag town, apprehending public protests against the killing of two militants on Wednesday in Mehman Mohalla of the area.

Police and CRPF soldiers were deployed in the morning in Lal Chowk and other old town areas such as Reshi Bazar, Cheeni Chowk, Malakhnag, Kadipora , Mattan adda, Dangerpora, Janglatmandi , Sherpora and Achajipora.

   

People in these areas were not allowed to venture out of their homes, although the authorities had not announced curfew.

Only the elderly were allowed to move towards main mosques Jamia Masjid Hanfia, Jamia Masjid Ahlihadith and Rehad Ded mosque for Friday prayers, the residents said.

Forces had laid concertina wires and barricades and virtually sealed the town.

However, KP road areas of the town witnessed movement of people.

Sporadic clashes also erupted in Moominabad and adjoining Dialgam village. 

The gunfight in which the militants were killed on Wednesday was the first in the town in the past 13 years. A strict curfew was imposed that day to foil protests.

On Thursday, the town observed shutdown to mourn the killing of the militants.

Qaimoh-Khudwani areas of Kulgam district also observed a shutdown for the sixth consecutive day to mourn the killing of local militants.

Meanwhile, protests erupted in Goriwan locality of Bijbehera town against alleged vandalism by government forces.

“The forces allegedly smashed vehicles and vandalized the property at Goriwan chowk,” the shopkeepers alleged.

This sparked off protests in the area following which shopkeepers downed their shutters.

Clashes also erupted in the area.

Meanwhile, internet service in Anantnag and Kulgam districts continue to remain shut on third consecutive day today.
