The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MLA from Sonwar constituency Muhammad Ashraf Mir on Wednesday left the government red-faced by demanding the constitution of a House committee to check the status of dredging in Jhelum post-2014 floods.
“A House committee should be constituted to probe the status of ongoing dredging work in Jhelum. I am not satisfied with the reply of the concerned minister,” Mir told the House.
The ruling party legislator said the government claims that it has started dredging of jehlum in Sopore and Baramulla but it should have been started from Srinagar and Sangam areas.
“I have apprehensions that the government is not serious about the issue. The fact is that work is not going in at any place,” Mir told the House and alleged that the concerned minister was trying to divert the question.
“They are not aware about how they have utilized the Rs 26 funds for dredging,” he claimed.
Meanwhile, opposition members Ali Muhammad Sagar and CPI (M) leader M Y Tarigami supported Mir for Constitution of a House committee.
“It is a serious issue and we need to take concrete action. The government is showing casual approach which is unacceptable,” Tarigami said.
“This is a serious charge from the MLA of the ruling party,” said Sagar.
