Sealing of offices, detention of leaders likely

The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) leaders and activists are likely to face action akin to the one faced by Jamaat-e-Islami cadres in the state recently, police said on Friday.

This action, according to an official, will be initiatedfollowing the government of India’s move declaring the JKLF—led by MuhammadYasin Malik—an “unlawful association” under the unlawful activities(prevention) Act, 1967.

While senior leaders of the organisation are likely to facedetention, its offices shall also come under the purview of the regulatoryorder, the official said.

The action in days to come will be similar to that ofJamaat-e-Islami (J&K), whose members were arrested on a mass scalerecently, while the offices of the socio-religious organisation and propertiesof its several activists were also seized after the government of India bannedit under the UAPA, the official said.

“Senior leaders of JKLF are most likely to face detention,”a senior police officer told Greater Kashmir, when asked about the possiblefallout of the Centre’s ban on JKLF Friday.

He said the ban was announced on Friday evening and it willtake a day or so “in deciding the further action”.

The JKLF has been banned for allegedly promotingsecessionist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

“The imposition of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Actitself means that strict action has to be taken against the concerned organisation,”the police officer said, wishing not to be named as he wasn’t authorised tospeak to media.

All the offices of JKLF will now come under regulatoryorders and action under norms will follow after observance of due procedures.

“Material in these offices can also be sealed and nomeetings will be allowed there any longer,” he said.

He said the “background check” of the organisation’sactivists and leaders will be carried out by the respective station houseofficers in their areas of jurisdiction “to help them carry out the threatperception”.

“The determination of threat perception will decide whichleader or activist will have to be booked or released,” he said.
