Hurriyat Conference (M) spokesman Shahid-ul-Islam, who was granted custody parole by a National Investigating Agency court earlier this week, met his family members in Srinagar on Thursday.
The NIA court on Monday granted Shahid week-long custody parole after his wife suffered a major stroke. He was arrested in July 2017 along with half-a-dozen separatist leaders by the agency. He has been undergoing detention at Tihar jail in New Delhi since.
A Delhi police team brought him to Srinagar by road on Wednesday evening. He was detained at police station Rajbagh for the night. On Thursday morning he was taken to his home, a police source said.
“Till parole ends he will be allowed to meet close family members from 9 am to 5 pm and he will be lodged at police station Rajbagh during nights,” he said.
Shahid was a key aide of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the leader of one of the factions of the Hurriyat Conference, and also acted as the separatist conglomerate’s spokesman.
Shahid’s wife Nuzhat Shah had suffered a brain hemorrhage at her home on 16 January and that was the second brain stroke she suffered within a week’s time, prompting several mainstream political parties to demand Shahid’s release on humanitarian grounds.
