The students of Kashmir University on Monday offered funeral prayers in absentia for militants and civilians killed during three gunfights in Anantnag and Shopian district yesterday.
An eye witnesses said the students came out of Zakura hostel, M.A hostel and M.A.K hostel and marched towards convocation complex amid protests and pro-freedom slogans.
“Earlier, the police deployed inside the campus had tried to disperse the students but couldn’t succeed,” he said, adding that funeral prayers in absentia were offered as the students reached outside the convocation complex where 13th J&K Science Congress 2018 is underway.
Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra is also present at the event.
He said a student namely Aquib sustained injuries after police tried to chase away protesting students.
“Without resorting to shelling or cane charging, the police tried to disperse protestors, but failed,” said another student, who was part of the protest.
He said the students later called-off their protest after offering funeral prayers in absentia for thirteen militants and four civilians killed yesterday.
Witnesses said the female boarders of all girls’ hostels also held protests against civilian and militant killings.
“The students held demonstrations inside their hostels as the main gates have been closed to prevent the boarders from coming out,” a protesting student told this reporter over phone from her hostel.
