Shopian witnesses low polling; people vote for development

Thursday morning a few voters in Shopian district’s Herman block began arriving at polling booths to cast their vote and said that they voted for development.

In Reshipora too, a middle-aged voter said that he voted for the development of the area.

“We have very high hopes from our candidate. If elected, he will develop the entire area,” he said.

The village witnessed comparatively a good number of voters.

In Kharwarah, Hindsitapora and Chotigam villages, people could be seen going about their daily chores.

Mohsin Qayoom, a PDP leader and contestant from DDC constituency Herman-I alleged that they were barred from canvassing freely.

“This is one of the key reasons for low voting,” he said.

Voters who steered clear of polling stations in Nildoora village said that they had lost faith in the mainstream political parties.

“They never fulfilled the promises they made during the successive elections. We can’t vote for them,” they said.

Eleven candidates were contesting for the two DDC seats that went to polls on Thursday.

A poll official said that the polling percentage for the two District Development Council constituencies – Herman-I and Herman-II, which went to polls on Thursday, witnessed 5.5 percent voting.

He said least 37 polling stations did not see any voting.
