Soldier’s killing: unknown ‘stone-pelters’ booked for murder

Day after the army said one of its soldiers was killed after being hit by a stone in his head, the police Saturday booked unknown “stone-pelters” under murder charges, officials said. 

The army Friday said its sepoy Rajendra Singh (22) was killed in southern Anantnag district after being hit by stone in his head. 

   

“The solider, who was part of Quick Reaction Team deployed for providing cover to Border Roads Organisation convoy Thursday, was hit by a stone on his head. He was evacuated to 92 base hospital in Srinagar where he succumbed on Friday. He belonged to Uttrakhand,” the army had said in a statement.

Replying to a query about the incident, the additional director general of police (law and order/security) Munir Khan said: “When a person is killed, FIR is filed under section 302 of RPC only. Same has been done here against unknown persons. Further probe is on.”

Khan was talking to reporters at district police lines Srinagar on sidelines of a wreath-laying ceremony of a Central Industrial Security Force officer killed in Nowgam on Srinagar outskirts Saturday.

About statement of army chief, generalBipinRawat that stone-pelters were allegedly over ground workers of militants and should be dealt with sternly, the ADGP Khan said: “I have no mandate to comment on what the army chief has said.”
