Traffic disrupted for 7 hours on Srinagar-Jammu highway

Ramban, June 11: The traffic on Srinagar-Jammu national highway remained suspended for about 7 hours after a landslide triggered on the highway at Seri area of Ramban on Friday.

Official sources said there was a huge landslide that blocked the highway leading to the suspension of movement of vehicles at around 6:30 am.

A large number of trucks enroute Srinagar and other vehicles remained stranded in scorching heat in long queues on both sides of the blockade on this highway.

Soon after the blockade, the contractor company engaged by NHAI pressed their men and several machines into service to clear the accumulated landslide from the highway.

The highway was restored at Seri for one-way traffic but the slow movement of vehicles resulted in a traffic jam from Seri to Ramban and Ramban to Chanderkote and Seri to Maroog and a few other places on the highway.

A traffic official regulating traffic said that the shooting stones at Seri were hampering the smooth flow of traffic.

Locals said that the landslides and shooting stones triggered due to road widening activity.

A manager of the contractor company said that a single lane was prepared for clearing the stranded traffic.

He said it would take more time to clear the debris accumulated on the highway.

“The intermittent triggering of landslides and shooting stones is hampering restoration work,” he said.
