Traffic to ply from Jammu to Srinagar today

After remaining closed for a day the Srinagar-Jammu highway was re-opened for traffic on Sunday, even as weatherman predicted rain and snow at isolated places across the state.

“The road has re-opened. Traffic plied from Srinagar to Jammu today,” inspector general of police, traffic, Basant, told Greater Kashmir. “The highway was cleared of all hurdles and traffic was allowed to move as per schedule.”

   

The IGP traffic said that on Monday traffic would ply from Jammu to Srinagar. “No vehicle will be allowed from the opposite direction.”

The highway was closed for traffic on Saturday following rains and snowfall that triggered land and mudslides on the highway at some places.

An official said that highway travelers are requested to contact Traffic Control Units (TCUs) set up at several places, in Srinagar, Jammu and Ramban before starting their journey on the highway. “People are also requested not to park their vehicles at avalanche and landslide prone areas,” he added.

The traffic was restricted to one-way after highway remained closed for four days due to heavy snowfall and landslides on February 16. 

Maenwhile, MeT officials said here that in coming three days there are least chances of any heavy spell of rain or snow in any part of the state. “There can be light rains or snow at very isolated places during next 24 hours,” director, MeT, Sonam Lotus, told Greater Kashmir.
