The MEA emphasised India’s distress regarding the escalating tensions in West Asia and their potential to fuel further violence and instability.

The Ministry of External Affairs said, “We have noted with concern the attack on Iranian diplomatic premises in Syria on 1 April 2024.  India is distressed at the escalating tensions in West Asia, and their potential to fuel further violence and instability.”

“We urge all parties to avoid actions that go against commonly accepted principles and norms of International Law,” added the MEA spokesperson.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has also condemned the attack separately, reaffirming the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises and personnel as a fundamental principle. Guterres reminded all parties to adhere to their obligations under international law and cautioned against attacks that could harm civilians and damage civilian infrastructure.

The attack in question targeted Iran’s consulate in Damascus, Syria, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals, including Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi and his deputy General Mohammad Hadi Hajriahimi of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).
