The police on Thursday registered an FIR into the alleged beating of a magistrate and his four other employees on election duty by the security forces in Anantnag district a day earlier.
Sub-divisional magistrate Doroo, Ghulam Rasool Wani, Tuesday alleged that soldiers thrashed him, his driver and three other officials, and also damaged his official vehicle near Dalwach-Ujroo area of Qazigund along the Srinagar-Jammu national highway in Anantnag district, when they were on way to attend an election-related meeting with the deputy commissioner Anantnag.
“They suddenly went berserk and even seized the poll material from us,” he said and added that his driver’s cellphone was also snatched and broken into pieces when he tried to call the DC.
SP Kulgam Gurandar Pal Singh told Greater Kashmir that a case has been registered into the “altercation between the SDM and soldiers”.
In his complaint, the SDM has accused the soldiers of aiming guns at him and his employees, threatening to kill them while grabbing him by his collar, dragging him, hurling abuses and beating him up.
The complaint said that only after the deputy commissioner Anantnag reached the spot were they set free.
The army has said that it was ascertaining the facts of the incident.
Meanwhile, both NC and PDP Wednesday held a protest in Anantnag against the alleged beating of the officials.
