Gandhi Nagar residents rue poor sanitation facilities

Residents of Gandhi Nagar locality in Jammu district claimed that the condition of sanitation facilities in their area is deplorable due to the careless attitude of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) staff.

People living near the residence of Kavinder Gupta, the former deputy chief minister and MLA Gandhi Nagar, said that most of the drains in their area are leaking, uncovered and choked.

“As and when it rains, the filthy water from these drains enters our houses. Further, the drains are not properly covered, thus posing a threat to the life of passerby particularly children,” one Ashok Kumar said.

He said that the prominent people of the area have been apprising the JMC staff as well as the local MLA about the issues of their area “but neither the JMC staff nor the BJP MLA ever made any attempt to ensure construction of proper drainage system in the locality.”

A Gandhi Nagar Gurudwara Committee member told Greater Kashmir, “In the last four years, we’ve forwarded several complaints about lack of proper drainage system in our area to the JMC office but no effort has been made to redress our issues.”

He also complained about the problem of choking of drains due to deposition of polythene bags and other solid waste material.
